I had a chance meeting with two young Chinese computer scientists age 28 and 33.It was one of the finest and most fun conversation. Both of these young men were from Shanghai and had studied in some interior china university.Conversation was for only a few minutes but information was quite eye opening. As China has one child policy i wondered if they had any siblings. To which i was surprised to find both have one sister.I learned that when older person's sibling had born there was no one child policy and the second one's sibling was born in rural china accomplished by making a payment(i do not know a legal fine or a bribery).
Both of these young men had 10 years of English studies, had done 12 years of high school and four years of computer studies in university getting a degree in computer science. In high school they studied mandarin,English, math, physics and chemistry. In college first two years they studied math and physics along with computer courses.
It seems like their employer was shifting some of the jobs done in states to china ,as it is a cheaper place to do business . I also became aware that China was becoming cheaper than India for low end it.I was quite impressed by their worldliness and openness.
My discussion about religion was also very interesting. As expected in true communist tradition these young men did not have a personal or public religion. They were not exposed to any.I felt sorry, not being exposed to faith or questions of purpose of life and after life. But any way we had a very short conversation to make any broad judgement.I asked when someone dear to them is sick and dieing what they did, answer was they wished recovery and kept the people in thoughts, i did not ask if that was supposed to help.
Other interesting thing was that one of them had bought a condo for 25000 dollars( cash ) with help from parents. These condos are technically on 70 year lease of govt land. This condo had 90 square meeter, which is around 360 square feet. This condo had two bedrooms and bath and kitchen.
When i asked them about Confucius they told me he was revered as master and wise saint of past. They studied as part of history.I told them about my reverence for him for his sayings about manhood its best as read through translations.
They felt people's feelings were mixed about Mao,they felt his role was important in freedom of the country, but did not like the cultural revolution and re education of city youth. One of them had a mother who had to move to villages when she was nineteen years old and eventually married his father .He was thankful for this benefit to society.May be more intermixing of rural and urban people happened because of re education.Their can be much easier ways to have the same effect if that is the intention.
