Poetry, is it needed for better learning

England has first woman (Caroline Duffy) as the poet laureate in its 350 year history.

Every child learns some poetry as part of study in school.Romantic Urdu poetry made me aware of different thoughts.I have known sadness,joy of rhyming and musical quality of poetry which one can enjoy without knowing music .Urdu poetry made me aware of delicateness of thinking.I slowly learned differences of bitterness of medicine ,expression and words.Gentleness of handling thorns and heartlessness of crushing flower petals. Received messages in clouds from clouds and let the daffodils sing my joys and share my sorrows.
I enjoy the melodies of Fado and can be part of it ,better with help from my wife( who is of Portuguese decent).My understanding of English , Hindi and Urdu poetry helps me enjoy Fado.its sad melodies.I can as easily get immersed in Spanish drama as well as Tamil drama though my language skills are close to none.
I think all these experiences with poetry and by default music helps me enjoy music a little better.May be poetry and music are two additional planes of understanding and comprehension .They are very closely related . Somebody much more versed than me in n cognitive sciences will have to explain these relationships.Does music and poetry's importance to develop understanding rise to the level of importance of arithmetic's,algebra,geometry,three dimensional geometry,differential and integral calculus and analytical math or theoretical physics we can argue .For sure it must have an important role for keeping human animal happy.Musical poetry gives me a feeling of euphoria and belonging even when i am alone.
