In Patiala when this street singer used to come everyday

These are memories of a young person of long time ago when things moved slower and made an impression. My Grandfather Tulsi Ram Datta who was retired and sat in the bethak(drawing room) which had an entrance on a side street. In the morning he got up and after taking bath sat in a caned comfortable large chair and sat in lotus with crossed legs and meditated .This was part of his daily ritual. This Sadhu( i do not have exact world to describe this person as he was a person who sang mostly religious songs) came by daily about 9 am or so and sang and played a string instrument ,i have image of the same in my mind but do not know the exact name of the instrument. My grandfather halted his meditation for this man and asked him to sing or play some tune .Offered him tea and alms(money) and very respectfully have him depart.I do not even remember if this person was blind or if he had a helper with him as he was handicapped. It is a mixed memory and only images and sounds remain.
I was thinking of those times half a century ago. What happened to that man and his family.Do they still sing. Are they from some famous musical family of today. This town Patiala was part of Pepsu and had a king(Maharaja). This story is of Independent india may be about 1958 i must have been about 9 year old.Old kingdoms had joined India union and had a special status where they maintained many privileges.Good thing about kings was they they supported artists and specialists and gave them employment and respect.
