Nicholas D Kristof has new york times to talk about world's solvable problems. His yesterdays article deals with girls on our streets. His main point is that we give lip service to treating problems of our weak and vulnerable members of the society. He mentions how very young Latina and African American girls sometime run away from homes or have argument with parents and are thrown out of home by frustrated parents .Many of these girls fall in the clutches of masters of deception the pimps. A cycle of abuse starts and continue for many years .Police and society instead of helping these young girl's become facilitators for their pimps and hurt the young. .Our system of criminalising and releasing young children on streets back to pimps is not only cruel, but its inhuman as well.
Police and child welfare agencies are ill equipped to take care of these girls. System needs to be developed (That is where faith based and community based senior citizens organizations can help) to have these girls provided support and teams of five social workers and five girls work together for training and support and to reduce the burn out of volunteers.
It is also important that as Nation we should reduce the cost and burden on our legal system by reducing sentences .Rehabilitation and providing financial and medical care for sick and indigent can also help.
Goal should be to reduce prison population by 25 percent in one year by better system of justice and law enforcement.Do not make more laws to make more actions illegal and clog the system even further .We have more young in prison than in armed forces .It is shame..
