Confucianism and China

China is a unique multi nation state .With thoughtful centralised political and economical power it is working at bringing progress and economical development to its people. It has lifted its masses from extreme poverty. It has been able to control its population with draconian measures of forced one child policy.Even if reversed its policy of forced one child there is very little chance that china will have any reversal in its population trends.Rest of the world thinks that its lopsided male population present a problem for its society .When i asked this question from my Chinese friends they said in cities, most of the girls were more concerned about finding a groom than boys finding a bride .This may be because earnings in cities are four to five times higher than villages and life's needs and wants are easily fulfilled in city.I became aware that in cities people ate meat every day.In China this has been considered a sign of affluence. No wonder city dwellers can import poor brides from villages leaving them (villages)short of labor and love for poor rural China. The other thing they said was that female population in younger chinese has started to equalise and many chinese may marry younger brides to ofset this inequity in population.
Prof.James miller in his article in Christian Science Monitor dated June 26 hopes that Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism will have an impact to make china ecologically sustainable harmonious society. He is professor of religion as such he can only hope and wish that all these ancient religions continue to have the impact on Chinese society .In his enthusiasm he might have forgotten what communist china has done.It has removed inherited individual property rights, religious freedom and will by destroying shrines temples and symbols of old ways .In most cities you will not find any thing older than 100 years old.Even the old city markers have been removed.Young (anybody younger than 50) have never known any regular prayer other than in glory of state. In realty central communist party has replaced church, temple, filial relations, police, adviser and spiritual guide. With this total control now being loosened a little some by choice some by globalization and its need to benefit from the trade. For a western mind it is hard to understand this type of control ,particularly when it has continued for generations. This power to the the party is total and without appeal. It is still considered an honor to be accepted in the party. While 1 in 20 might be active members. That still puts the number at 60 million people. These are privileged dependents of state ,who belong to this large exclusive all pervasive club.
You will be hard pressed to find Chinese younger than 50 who know any system of prayer. To expect china to follow Confucius,Buddha and Tao takes a leap of faith not faith in enterprise China.
