AMA is for reducing the Mal practice awards and is saying that one of the reason for medical care to cost so much.We are a litigious society.Insurance companies and AMA can work together so that their are no errors in practice .With the reduced damage to patients the rate of Mal practice insurance should go down or hospitals and doctors should band together and start self insurance pool.Heaven knows they have enough resources and clout .
In last twenty five years many not for profit (Blue Cross Blue Shield's) were bought or converted to for profit health care provider and the people who were able to put these deals made billions of dollars costing us all those billions. It did not add any value to the patient or the networks which bought into the system. All the insurance regulators slept while this was being done.
Most of the Medical care enterprises do not have any efficiencies of scale after the 200 bed hospital size. Yes for sure pooled purchasing and billing can help to economise.
Medical billing systems are so corrupt and skewed that they have been over charging state and federal government billions of dollars every year.
Look at any bill you will find they have charges which are really astronomical and if one has insurance they may get paid 20 or 25 percent then they keep on harassing patients for co pays.
Some plans may bill $5 dollars and spend 50 dollars of time to collect it many times these charges occur in error. Most of the billing offices are not able to resolve the problems they have to get back. Mostly they do not ,as work is shuffled between many handlers.
