What is being poor in India means.According to Government of India they have two criteria . One is expenses of less than 10000 Rupees per person per year or about $220.Other definition is consumption of 2200 calories in cities and2400 calories in villages. It reflects the need of more calories in rural setting.
Some people have defined it as starvation index not poverty index.India needs a new definition
where poverty may be defined as absence of running water, electricity, shelter, sewage. basic health care education.Only 40 years ago India ,China, Mexico and middle east and Africa were considered similarly poor. Some of these regions have done much better than others.India has opportunity to provide services to its citizens hope they the will and determination to do it.
Hundred days of employment to head of the house hold on national scale will help eliminate extreme poverty.I am surprised in budget more effort and funds were not allocated for direct aid to poor and primary education and sewage and water projects.
In us also a guaranteed 100 day employment should be implemented to tackle the chronic un employment.
India is on the path to create a better social security tracking system .I hope they are successful We may be able to use it even in US.
