One of Salingers Alma Matter for years wanted to capitalise on his popularity and promote literature in their Pennsylvania Urisinus College.
JDS had lived in dorm for one semester and had been writing for the school paper.In last fifty years "catcher in rye had be required reading in many of high schools in the country and students have sympathised with the bratty Holden Caulfield and his lover.
When college announced a 30000 scholarship in JD's name they got a letter for them not to exploit his name and stop.
As time went by they chose a scholarship "not JD Saliger scholarship " with the prize that the winner will stay in Salingers dorm room with the plaque "Salinger slept here."To win the scholarship a freshman would have to write a literary piece.
I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE URSINUS COLLEGE IS SUCCESSFUL IN DOING SO AS I AM BLOGGING ABOUT IT AND NEW YORK TIMES HAS GIVEN IT NICE SPACE IN IT.AFTER THE DEATH OF SALINGER HE HAS GOT MORE INK IN TIMES. IT JUST HAPPENS I HAD READ 'CATCHER IN RYE' NOT LONG AGO AND FOUND IT VERY MEDIOCRE.
