While reading Indian news papers i am becoming more and more aware of the independence of Indian courts. When I was growing up(40 years ago) all the administration and judicial and magisterial systems were arbitrary, pro govt.Police acted as if they still worked for the BRITISH.
Lack of respect for policemen and citizens were common. In villages police officers acted as demi gods (with the powers of prosecutor ,judge, jury and at times even executioner).
Starting with emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in seventies supreme court showed its Independence .Since then courts of all levels have shown more and more independence.Institutions like CBI which is somewhat parallel to FBI in USA have also matured and have become more effective and lesser political.Switching of power in the center has also played important role and has given power and mandate to national institutions to become non political.
RTI (right to information act of 2005 ) has opened India's govt systems to public scrutiny.Supreme court has also forced the states and federal government to obey the rule. The development and availability of Internet, and many private news Chanel's have also helped open up the process.
Roles of lawyers is becoming more important in the society. It is important that nation be vigilant to excesses of legalism so we may loose the gains of better legal protections under the law.
BETTER LAWS AND LAW ABIDING CITIZENRY (ON AVERAGE)IS THE BEST we wish for.
