Ayatollah Ali Khamenei the supreme leader if Iran is not elected and has the supreme power in the country. This is not much different than the king having the supreme power in several western parliamentarian democracies. It is actually a little bit better than hereditary divine powers of many eastern, western and other kings and despots.
Khamenei is second Ayatollah of Iran and is not related to the first one.Iran and Shia sects of Islam have along tradition of giving special status to descendants of powerful and holy men. Including Grand Son of Mohammad founder of Islam. For a young constitution of Iran to have such a system of checks on the absolute power of elected president serves the nations character better than the first impression. Here the supreme leader is selected by a select group of elders(house of lords Parallel) with no inherited appointments.
It is more important to see that how Iran adjusts to the more internationalised world and give its citizens freedoms so that they may achieve the whole potential they have.
