American Dorms and lack of refrigerators, students

Any parent knows what a nuisance it is for the students to lug their bedding ,sheets pillows, lamps ,printers and small fridges and microwaves for attending these expensive schools(party Central). After having done for my two daughters at least four times a year.I HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS.

It is about time that these dormitories came furnished with basic accessories and appliances .Cost for all those items would be no more than 120 dollars per year. Savings in aggravation alone would offset this cost.Any additional savings could be passed on to university. It would be like Standard student issue materials(same as grunts in military.

IN addition all students should be provided with water thermoses.Convenient Purified Tap water filling stations be provided in each dorm and all around the campus.

NYT, City of earthly delights, Thomas Hoving

George Prochnic op-ed in NYT puts a light on life of Thomas Hoving an unusual NY park commissioner and director of MOMA( museum of modern art)for ten years.

In a short stint as a parks commissioner (15 months)he promoted construction of 1000 mini or pocket parks in the city.He suggested that it add only 140 acres of park space to the city .I do not know how many of those parks were ever built but am sure the one's built provided a great solace to the weary neighborhood youth and retired folks.

Parks are much better investment for the elderly to take care of than any state can develop.I would suggest such projects for cities in India as well as any urban centers in America.

Many years ago my wife wanted to build playgrounds for city kids in all the neighborhoods ,we for lack of a good plan ,energies and critical mass(including financial resources) never have been able to fulfil her dream.

MR Hoving allowed rich people to build such parks and have them named after them such a water park with a fall was built with funding from CBS and named after Paley.
Design competitions can be held in all high schools for design of the parks and get the kids involved.

Small ponds and lakes could be also part of these parks .which would provide green and lively space in asphalt jungles .would reduce flooding in the streets and save the rain water for alternate use including recreation.May be these are the lofty ideas .They are not new . A tribute in NYT for one of the parks is here according to the op-ed.

With its ivy-covered walls and 20-foot-high waterfall, Paley Park proved an enormous hit from the moment it opened. The Times labeled it “a corner of quiet delights.” Early visitors waxed enthusiastic about the relief it provided from the din of the streets, and the “acoustic perfume” of the park’s waterfall.

The idea of central Park and many others around the nation including national parks make me proud of these wise forefathers who left gods gifts to man intact and at times stopped man from ruining them completely.

China is role model in experimentation in land reclamation and other systems

China at times considered the worst of capitalist systems has freed its country from regulations, where they can experiment with innovative ideas and systems. Its communist system has given it opportunity to do it on an accelerated fashion.Similar projects in India , America and western Europe would have taken years to plan.In China they can see the results of some of these projects show benefits in less than ten years from thinking stage.

Some of the credible work they have done involves in Changing hilly baron areas by terracing the slopes and build lakes at the bottom . this has created green hills and slowed the water flooding down the lower area.Reducing land erosion.Slow movement of rain water which is the best way to harvest water has made the land fertile. It has created better environment for the wild life and native species of plants are also prospering in this environment.Hydro power is becoming more reliable and reducing the use of oil, gas or coal has made it more friendly and has saved much needed revenue. Creating living soil absorbs carbon may be if scale this process may be we will not worry about carbon in the air .Our replanted wild and terraced farming in the hills can support much higher number of people at lower hydro carbon (oil)need.

It is time that we learn from the Chinese and American experiment and avoid the automobile industry for the masses.More advanced public mass transportation can serve India well .Smaller land mass .Higher population density can help it to develop efficient infrastructure.Cities built vertical can better use of water , sewage and more centralised power generation. This can help to bring the development at faster pace than larger nations can do.We need to learn from Japan , China and USA.India needs to follow best of their practices for development. Is it not strange that we still do not know what practices will work best.

We need to keep our systems more in sync with America as it is still the center of world economies.USA will remain so for next two generations. Even after that America will remain a vital player of innovation for its characters .It is lesser likely that any more vital a nation will replace it soon.America will become more internationalised than it is now and world will become more American. It is all better for the world and man kind.
